Community Organizer—Six Month Contract Position

The Barbara Jordan / Bayard Rustin Coalition (JRC) works to empower Black same-gender loving, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals and families in Greater Los Angeles, to promote equal marriage rights and to advocate for fair treatment of everyone without regard to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.


The Jordan/Rustin Coalition (JRC) seeks a dynamic person with experience in community organizing to serve as JRC’s Community Organizer. As the sole paid staff person for JRC, the organizer will be responsible for administrative duties as well as doing grassroots organizing in the African-American communities of Los Angeles.


  • Develop a field plan which will allow for the identification, training, and empowering of local LGBT and non-LGBT volunteer activists
  • Oversee the day-to-day administrative requirements of the JRC office
  • Work with coalition partners on existing field organizing structures (i.e. the Vote for Equality Canvassing Program)
  • Host community events on behalf of JRC
  • Identify potential LGBT and non-LGBT coalition partners
  • Coordinate and manage JRC’s foundation-funded initiatives and activities
  • Making monthly reports to the Board of Directors indicating progress
  • Assist in all phases of the grant application process including researching grant opportunities, grant writing, and reporting to funders


  • Knowledge and curiosity about the LGBT community particularly in African-American areas
  • Relevant knowledge and experience in organizing African-American and/or LGBT communities in Los Angeles
  • Experience with social justice and/or non-profit organizations
  • Experience with electoral campaign work
  • Excellent communications skills – written and oral


Salary is commensurate with experience.
